Essential WordPress Plugins

WordPress is awesome because it is plug & play. If there is a functionality you need for a website – it’s more then likely it’s already wrapped into a neat little plugin by someone. All you need to do is go to WordPress.org and look for it.
What folllows is a list of plugins I install every time I set up a new WordPress installation…
Akismet – well, this comes preinstalled – but it’s still important. Akismet helps keep the spammers away. It’s a self proclaimed “best way in the world to protect your blog from comment and trackback spam”. It’s created by the creators of WordPress themselves (Automattic) so you can be pretty sure they know what they are talking about. To activate it all you need is an API key from WordPress.com which you can get easily enough.
All in One SEO Pack – This plugin by Michael Torbert is pretty much all you need in terms of SEO for your WordPress – well that and TrafficTravis. It’s “out-of-the-box SEO for your WordPress blog”. One of the things it does automatically is help rank individual blog posts by using post content in the meta keywords tag… Comes packed with numerous other useful features.
Enhanced WP-ContactForm – Joost de Valk of Yoast.com created this little beauty. It’s simple. It’s neat. It works. An out of the box contact form for your website.
FeedBurner FeedSmith – I don’t leave home without it. This plugin lived on feedburner.com until feedburner was bought by Google (that’s how good the plugin is). What does it do? It takes upon itself the burden of distributing your RSS feed to your subscribers. In simple terms: instead of serving 1000 connections to your 1000 subscribers when you post a new post, you serve your post to your feedburner account and feedburner serves the post to your 1000 subscribers thus significantly reducing the bandwidth you use up on your hosting account and significantly improving the performance of your site.
Google Analytics – a simple and effective way to install Google Analytics on your site and track your site’s performance. Easy.
Google XML Sitemaps – Another plugin that’s self explanatory and does a lot of work for you. Automatically regenerates your sitemap every time you publish a post etc.
Math Comment Spam Protection – Math Comment Spam Protection asks the visitor making the comment to answer a simple math question. This is intended to prove that the visitor is a human being and not a spam robot.
Optin Comments – the WordPress plugin that helps turn blog commenters into newsletter subscribers as described in our OptinComments Review.
Page Links To – As explained in a post a wrote a few days ago, this plugin helps link a WordPress page to an external resource.
SexyBookmarks (by Shareaholic) – SexyBookmarks adds a (X)HTML compliant list of social bookmarking icons to each of your posts.
Top Contributors – Encourage more feedback and discussion from readers by rewarding them every time they post a comment! Readers with the most comments are displayed on your WordPress blog, with their names (linked to their website if they provided one), Gravatar etc.
Smart Archives Reloaded – Smart Archives Reloaded allows you to display a list of posts grouped by year and month. It also provides several interesting navigation elements.
Subscribe To Comments Reloaded – Subscribe to Comments Reloaded allows commenters to sign up for e-mail notifications of subsequent replies.
Theme Test Drive – As explained in a post I wrote recently, this plugin lets you test a new WordPress theme while your readers remain unaware.
WPLogger – This plugin lets you debug WordPress by logging.
TweetMeme Retweet Button – An easy and effective way of showing a tweet button on your blog posts.
WordPress.com Stats – Tracks views, post/page views, referrers, and clicks. Requires a WordPress.com API key.
WP-DB-Backup – On-demand backup of your WordPress database.
WordPress Popular Posts – Showcases your most popular posts to your visitors on your blog’s sidebar. Use WordPress Popular Posts as a widget or place it anywhere on your theme using code.
WP No Category Base – Removes ‘/category’ from your category permalinks.
WP Page Numbers – Show pages numbers instead of “Next page” and “Previous Page” on index and on archives etc.
WP Super Cache – Very fast caching plugin for WordPress.
I’d love to hear what other plugins you use as I am always on the lookout for new features for my sites.

“Yet Another Related Post” and “Comment Luv” are two more i generally use on all my wordpress blogs……
I’ve been using most of those plugins as well. But recently I found “WordPress SEO” by Yoast (yoast.com), and it totally changed the ordinary plugins I install on a new wordpress site! Not only does it give you the functions of “All in One SEO” (and also an option to import the config from All-In-One-SEO options) but also XML-sitemaps and also the “No Category Base” functions. So by using 1 plugin you can skip at least 3 plugins from your list + a ton of other features!
Impressive! I’ve tried a couple of them which are already on the list and will also try the others! Good sharing and thanks!
Great list! How do you ADD a section for SPONSORS or Banner Ads to the WP site? Thanks, Mars
