Dumb Domaining Ideas
I've been putting in more time to the domaining business, and looking at auctions and sales on forums is something i've been doing lately.
I can't seem to understand why some people register and try to sell some really ridiculous domain names. I suppose this can be a "domaining mistakes to avoid" thread...
I'll start...
Who are the people registering and trying to sell off domains that are keywords spaced by hyphens? For example.... d-e-n-t-i-s-t-s.com or l-o-a-n-s.com (just examples) I feel that these domains are totally worthless for type-in traffic and any kind of search optimization. I can maybe see a short word working for PPC purposes, but otherwise, seem like a huge waste of money to me. Only reason i bring this up is because i saw someone trying to off a long 10+letter domain spaced with hyphens....

Re: Dumb Domaining Ideas
Wow! that really sounds amazing, if you mean that there was a hyphen between every single one of those 10+ letters... that is defenately something amazing. I mean I am new, and probably I have bought some domains that probably were less than reg fee or I will, but I certainly won't do it d-e-l-i-b-e-r-a-t-e-l-y

Re: Dumb Domaining Ideas
When I browse through expired domain names you would be surprised about the amount of typos I see... but like retarded typos that noone in their right mind would ever naturally type in no matter how drunk they are.
But yea, the s-t-u-p-i-d dashes still take the cake.

Re: Dumb Domaining Ideas
I've accidentally registered a few misspelled domains myself by accident, I was really surprised something was available, so I really quickly registered it and afterwards I realised why it was free, I'd spelt it wrong!

Maybe I can provide some insight into this...I'm NOT defending it, it IS stupid.
You're complete right that they're worthless for type in traffic but SEO can be done for any domain, remember SEO is about content by and large.
As I understand it, and I can't say for sure b/c I wouldn't ever register one, but I've heard that Google doesn't "see" hyphens in a domain name. So as far as Google is concerned d-e-n-t-i-s-t-s.com is just as good as dentists.com.
Again, I don't know this for a fact but I've seen this given as rationale for hyphenated domains.
It's still stupid.

Re: Dumb Domaining Ideas
I won a domain in auction(thankfully for reg price), after I won it I quickly realized that I won the misspelling and that is why no one bid on the domain. Ooops!
One of my first domains that I regged when trying to learn about domaining was something like mp3-marketplace.com. I paid for a godaddy tdnam listing and had dreams of easy cash, boy did I learn quick.
All in all, each mistake ads experience and knowledge and I'm better for it.

No, Google does see hyphens and recognizes them as a word break / space. I've never seen this type of domain in the SERPs, but word-word-word.com can work just as well as wordwordword.com with the right search marketing.

In that case I guess it's just plain misguided. A lot of domainers I think are willing to pawn off crap on newbies as long as they can make a quick buck off it.

Re: Dumb Domaining Ideas
I'd never type in a-m-b-e-r-d-e-x-t-e-r-i-o-u-s.com into a browser. Not only does it look ugly, but it takes me close to a minute to type it. And if it takes that long, it isn't good.

I hear you.
But that brings up another question...would you type "amberdexterious.com" in? And if so, what would you be looking for? I ask because it is in fact unregistered.
Maybe you mean "ambidextrous"?
