Lightbulb Domain Tasting - Good, Bad or Indifferent?

On my mind...

So I've been noticing an increase lately in the number of domains that I seemingly have caught and regged (proceed to do the happy dance), only to receive an email from NoDaddy minutes later telling me that an "error" occurred and, unfortunately, the domain is already registered. Obviously I've been hoodwinked by an automated domain snatcher. Fine. No sour grapes.

Here's the thing...like clockwork, about 4 days later - just as the "test drive" period is about to expire - miraculously, NoDaddy informs me that the domain has been successfully registered.

No to be confused with domain kiting - the unscrupulous practice of registering, dropping, then immediately re-registering names to avoid paying fees - tasting allows owners to give the domain a trial run, monitor traffic, etc. then drop the name for a refund within the 5 day grace period (minus ICANN).

What's your opinion of domain tasting? Do you think it's an accepted norm of the industry? Should it be?

No thoughts on domain tasting? Well, I guess that answers my question.

New article published by the legal team at Sedo. Looks like domain tasting may be going the way of the dinosaurs.
