Question Thoughts on .TEL?

I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts on .TEL, I personally really liked the concept when I first read about it (quite a while ago) but thought it was dead in the water when nothing seemed to be happening. Now that it looks alive and well, what are the perceived advantages/disadvantages for it?

I don't really see the advantage in .tel domains, as it stands for telephone but then on the internet it seems to make telephone business contacts outdated in favor of email etc.

Hmm that made more sense in my head!

The thing about tel is that you won't need to host the domain name ... your contact information is stored on the domain.

So you get NameSugar.tel and enter your contact details via their interface and folks look for NameSugar.tel via their blackberry, iphone or whatever else and they get all your contact details listed - it's to replace the yellow and white pages - that's their aim at least.

It's pretty neat I reckon.

Ah rite, I should of looked it up before posting, didn't realise that.

Sounds quite a good idea then, just depends on how many people actually use it I guess

I plan on getting a few... Depends on the price point. In my view it is a little different animal then most of the other tlds (for the fact that nothing is really hosted).

I feel it may be a more valuable domain tld then others becaues you are just buying on the name instead of development potential.

My concerns would be:
* restrictions (not allowing hosting dns information pointer)
* Pricing
* (big one) Interface / software adoption to read the .tel easily

I am curious too if they will allow other tlds to implement the addtional dns records.

Saves some money on printing out all my contact information on business cards. You could probably do something similar to what they have with a dedicated .com or .me and a little bit of development.

lol @poika - good hack example!

Except I don't think they will allow the use of the .tel domain as conventional domain names (hosted elsewhere with DNS pointed to host IPs).

ho.tel and mo.tel were my first thoughts on the subject when I was chatting about the landrush with a friend a couple of weeks ago.

I own a website that is dedicated to trying to provide information on tel domains and I'm still working through the details. The cost to register the domain is quite steep. For the general public, it would behoove someone to purchase a tel in their own name. Since it is used for the contact information, it will be interesting to see how many "John Smith" individuals what their tel domains. I guess if you were to buy a tel domain with a generic name, unlike other tlds, this may be more lucrative? Any thoughts?

depends on what "other tlds" you're talking about. i doubt it could be more lucrative that com/net/org anytime soon. i think a few years will have to pass until .tel spreads wide enough. and even then, how could it beat other tlds?

FYI: .tel pre-apps have already started at most of the registrars. Was just checking the registry website and realized that the landrush ends on the 23rd March 09. So people interested could check them out..
